Pictorella Mannikin

Other Names: Pictoral finch, Pictorella, White breasted finch, Pictorella Mannikin

Size: 11cm

Habitat: Spinifex plains near water. A highly nomadic bird moving away from coast to country during rains and returning to coastal grasslands during arid conditions. Normally close to water however these birds will travel long distances to reach water daily.

Distribution: Far North Western Australia, moving towards East Queensland. 

Food: Feeding on the floor in the wild for seeds, weeds and insects. In the aviary a standard finch mix will suffice. Include live food and sprouted seeds / greens during the breeding season. 

Nesting: A rough, bulky and domes shaped nest. no entrance spout. nest is lined internally with feathers.

Breeding: From January through to April, extending towards Nov through to May. Clutch sizes of 4 to 6 eggs. Incubation is carried out by both sexes. Young are fully fledged at 20 to 23 days.

Sexing: Purplish black of throat and side of face  are present in the Male with the brownish-black visible in the female. Black bars are also more visible in the female.

Notes: During the breeding season, do NOT touch the nest. They will abandon the nest if you try and inspect it.
